Readings: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 and Luke 1:39-56
This Sunday, we welcome Laura Ruth back from her sabbatical time! I am preaching Mary’s Song, the Magnificat, from Luke 1. The young pregnant woman glorifies a God who lifts up the lowly, humbles the powerful, and upends everything. Our Advent theme is “already…but not yet.” Each year, we retell the same story and attempt to hear it anew. Mary is expecting Jesus each year, and each year Jesus arrives in the manger. God’s Love has arrived in the world already, but we have not yet seen the fullness of God’s Love made real in the face of sinful webs of power. What can we learn from the hope of a young, unmarried, pregnant Mary? What new things are possible?
