Queer and Weak: Christ the King?
Readings: Psalm 93 and John 18:33-38
The last Sunday of the liturgical year is known as Christ the King Sunday, commemorating the sovereignty of Jesus Christ as our true leader. But we all know how Jesus’ life ends, which raises the question: what does it mean to call Jesus Christ king? Furthermore, in our post-imperial world does it even make sense to employ such language? Or, perhaps, we’re going about it all wrong–and that maybe the answers may lie in a queer/subversive understanding of whom Jesus Christ was and what he was setting out to accomplish. Please join me for a lively exploration!
