Rev. Laura Ruth Jarrett
The White Gaze
Readings: Psalm 107:1-9, 43; Luke 12:13-21
Earlier, I preached on “need” – knowing our own needs, the practice of asking our needs be met, and seeing to the needs of others as a spiritual practice and technology. This is especially true in a world that gives us what we don’t need or withholds from us what is necessary. Now, I want to try to parse “want” to see if “want” is a relative of “need.” I hope to endorse what Karen Barnard’s father said, “My responsibility is to give you all of what you need and some of what you want.” I want to explore what happens when the want of some bump up against the need of some.
